Austin Countertops Project Expectations

Are You Ready?

The most important service Austin Countertops can provide is an excellent experience.

Any project, large or small, can be a bit overwhelming. Starting in 1971, Austin Countertops began refining the process of installing interior design surfaces in client homes and businesses. We have a wealth of expertise and information that we love to share and we want to help every client learn how to make their project go as smoothly as possible.

Our goal is to help you better prepare for the process, thus decreasing any stressful surprises and ultimately provide you with quality products and superior results.

Good To Know…

Installing interior design surfaces involves cutting, routing and sanding, laminate, solid surface, cultured marble and/or stone in your space. This inherently produces noise, dust, and small particles of waste material.

The glue used to fabricate laminate countertops, as well as the adhesive used to seam solid surface or stone countertops will have a strong odor.

During the installation process, young children, expectant mothers, or individuals with respiratory problems should seek temporary refuge away from the work area. Opening windows for ventilation may be necessary. The smell clears quickly after the installation is complete; however, some people may find it irritating during fabrication and/or installation.

Dust is extremely difficult to contain because it moves in a manner very similar to steam. Everything in the immediate area of the installation will be covered with fine dust. We recommend using plastic and/or bed sheets to drape over door openings into adjacent rooms of your home.

Our installers respect your space and always clean the immediate work area after they have finished, but your interior environment will not be as clean when we leave as it was when we arrived.

Installers will need a flat place to work outside to cut the sink and backsplash holes

Install duration can vary from a couple of hours to a couple of days depending upon the product, the amount of product being installed and the technical difficulty required to complete installation.

Details on Completing a Tear Out

If you select to have Austin Countertops tear out your existing interior surfaces we will take every precaution to limit drywall and cabinetry damage that may be involved with the removal of the old surfaces.

Unfortunately, some minor damage may be done to existing backsplashes, cabinets or wall coverings during tear out. Austin Countertops is not responsible for this damage. Repairs may be necessary by others. Austin Countertops is not responsible for any minor scratching of existing appliances that could occur during tear out.

Austin Countertops will also use every precaution to limit the dust and dirt created by demolition. You should expect some dust to settle after the removal of your old surfaces. Please be prepared to wipe up dust for a few days. To minimize the spread of dust in your home, you may want to partition the work area from other parts of your home and turn off your air conditioning system.

A substantial number of trips will be made from the outside work area to the interior work area. Please plan a path that you would like Austin Countertops to use, keeping in mind that the path must be of sufficient size to carry large pieces of material which are carried through tight corners.

You will need to have a plumber come out and disconnect your sinks, disposals and faucets before we can remove your old surfaces. All professional installers employed by Austin Countertops are prevented by law from disconnecting or reconnecting any plumbing or electrical work. Please contact your distributor or an electrician/plumber to arrange for this service. We will not disconnect or reconnect any gas appliances.

The customer should plan to without the use of appliances for as long as two days.
If ceramic tiles are located above your countertop, the bottom few rows must be torn out. This must be done by a certified tile specialist. If keeping your existing backsplash is an issue, we suggest “scribing”. We would scribe the profile of the wall and cut the countertops to fit. Scribing will incur an additional cost and will need to be noted on the Work Order prior to measure.

Mirrors in bathrooms that are affixed to the wall and resting on or within 1″ of the top of the existing backsplash or countertop must be removed by customer before tear out.

Any necessary supporting brackets must be installed on the cabinetry. If cabinets are not level there will be gaps present between the countertops and the cabinet tops that will then require trimming out by a carpenter. Austin Countertops will not be responsible for any trim work or carpentry necessary to correct these levels. Further, if the levels are, excessive, an extra charge will be incurred by the customer for the extra shimming work done by our installers.

All cabinets, down draft vents, and upper bar supports must be in place, secure and level. If you have an appliance garage, please ensure that the cabinetmaker leaves enough clearance between the cabinet top and bottom of the garage for the countertop to fit.

Plumbing and Electrical Details

You will need to have a plumber disconnect your sinks, disposals and faucets before we can install. If we are doing a full splash we will have to remove the faceplates and pull the electrical outlet from the wall. If it is necessary to have any outlets moved, you will be informed, and it is your obligation to have them relocated prior to your installation. Cooktops and ranges will need to be disconnected. We do not disconnect the cook-tops and sometimes have to pull the freestanding ovens away from the wall. We do not reinstall any plumbing or electric.

Sink Details
All under-mount sinks must be available to Austin Countertops before measure or be on jobsite on the day of measure. Sink faucet layout information will be confirmed with the customer before the job goes into production.

Cooktop and Range Details
All information regarding model, size etc. must be provided to Austin Countertops before the job can go into production.
Taps, Hot Water Dispensers and Grommet Hole Details.

The cut-out dimensions and measurements for all hardware for sink taps, hot water dispensers, soap dispensers and any other holes must be available before job can go into production. Information regarding the number, size and placement/layout of any holes to be drilled must also be accessible on the day of measure.

Once the job has been measured, the Owner or Customer will need to approve the final measurement/templates. If there is a variance in the square footage quoted, and/or if there is a change in any original instruction, the Work Order will be revised and will need to be approved before continuing with the job.

Step 3 – Create Your Space

“I don’t know where to start.”
We hear that phrase almost every day. Every interior designer and builder will tell you that every project has many decisions that must be made, and usually on a deadline.

Where do you start?
Hunt and Research. Professional Interior Designers will often recommend looking through home oriented interior design-type magazines and websites to look at different projects. Take notes, save pages from magazines and websites that show either an entire project or perhaps a simple detail that you like.

Gather together your notes and pages and look for a theme. Do you seem to be drawn to a light, bright, natural design? Or urban pops of color, clean lines and a mix of surfaces might be more your style. French provincial, traditional, shabby chic, modern, Victorian, Amish, mission, craftsman, art deco – the possibilities are different for every person and every room.

Take note of function. How do you want to use the space? Entertaining, private retreat, is barrier free accessibility a potential requirement? Think short-term and long-term, how will you use the space in five years, 10 or even 20 years.

Graph paper is your friend, grab a cheap tablet of graph paper and get out a measure tape. Make some rough drawings using your graph paper. Create and revise until you get a general idea of what your vision is. Measure the length of your walls, windows, doors – include as much detail as possible. Your measurements don’t have to be perfect – it is just a great place to start visualizing how everything will work together.

Now bring all of that great information to our team at Austin Countertops! We are here to look at your samples, pages, drawings and color chips. We are here to listen and understand what you need. We are happy to share our knowledge and experience about all of our products and services so that we can help you bring your vision to life.
